Our man and van in Leeds
Man With Van Long Wheelbase is one driver and one Ford Transit long wheelbase van, based in Bradford, 10 miles from Leeds (25-40 minutes by road). Leeds is inside our core area, so the drive is simply part of one fixed price agreed before we set off.
Moving in Leeds: what to know first
Central Leeds has been rebuilt around buses, bikes and people on foot under the Connecting Leeds programme. East Parade has a 24-hour bus gate, Bishopgate into City Square and Leeds Bridge onto Lower Briggate are camera-enforced bus gates, and Cookridge Street is closed to traffic altogether. A city-centre address is therefore approached from whichever side is legal, and the van stops in a loading bay rather than at the door. Managed blocks at Granary Wharf, Leeds Dock and the Arena Quarter usually want the lift and the loading area booked through the concierge first.
Leeds went on building back-to-backs into the 1930s, long after most towns had stopped, and many still stand. Harehills was laid out in the 1890s as close-packed back-to-backs on a south-facing slope, and Beeston grew the same way, so a move there often means one front door onto the pavement and furniture carried through the front room. Hyde Park is late Victorian red-brick terraces, many of them shared houses. Holbeck, just south of the station, is best known now for the converted mills and newer blocks of Holbeck Urban Village. Semis in Horsforth, Moortown and Roundhay usually have a drive the van can back onto.
The van is a long wheelbase Transit about 2.5m tall, so it cannot pass a 2.1m barrier into a basement or multi-storey car park and loads from the street or a loading bay instead. Leeds has no charging Clean Air Zone, as the plan was cancelled in 2020, so nothing is added for driving a van in. On Headingley Stadium match days the streets around St Michael's Lane fill early, which is worth knowing before you pick a moving date in Headingley or Kirkstall.
Parking and access in Leeds
Short, enforced loading bays in the city centre, permit parking on many streets in Headingley, Hyde Park and Woodhouse, double yellows on the main roads, and on-street-only parking on the terraced streets. The van is about 2.5m tall, so 2.1m car park barriers are out. There is no charging Clean Air Zone, so a van pays nothing to enter.
- East Parade has a 24-hour bus gate and Bishopgate into City Square and Leeds Bridge onto Lower Briggate are camera-enforced bus gates, so a van is routed around them, not through the centre.
- Cookridge Street is closed to traffic under Connecting Leeds, which blocks one of the obvious cross-centre shortcuts.
- City-centre apartment blocks need the lift and a loading-bay slot booked with the concierge or building manager in advance.
- Back-to-back terraces in Harehills and Beeston have a single front door and no rear access, so furniture comes through the front room.
- Streets around Headingley Stadium on St Michael's Lane fill on test match and rugby league days.

Frequently asked questions: man with a van in Leeds
How much does a man and van cost in Leeds?
Send photos of what is going and both postcodes, and you get one figure back before the van leaves Bradford. The size of the load sets most of it. In Leeds the rest is usually access: a booked lift slot in a city-centre block, a walk from the nearest loading bay, or stairs in a Headingley terrace, plus the miles between the two addresses. Leeds is in our core area, so nothing is added for the drive over, and the prices page explains how a quote is built.
My Leeds apartment block has an underground car park with a height barrier. Will the van fit?
Not under a barrier of about 2.1m, because the Transit is roughly 2.5m tall. It uses the nearest loading bay or street space and the lift instead. Tell us the building name and the concierge's rules, and the access is planned before the day.
Can you move me out of student halls or a Headingley house share?
Yes. Halls, shared houses and private flats across Headingley, Hyde Park, Woodhouse and the city centre are all covered, and one room is fine. Book as early as you can for the summer changeover, when outgoing and incoming tenants want the same kerb space.
Can the van reach a flat inside the Leeds city-centre bus gates?
Yes, but not by driving through them. The van keeps out of the East Parade, City Square and Leeds Bridge bus gates, stops at the nearest legal loading point and the last stretch is on a trolley. Give us the building's delivery entrance when you book.
