Harehills: what to know before moving day
Most of the terraces went up quickly in the 1890s as closely packed back-to-backs for workers, after a plan for wide streets and detached villas called New Leeds came to nothing. A back-to-back has its only door and windows on the front, so loading happens from the pavement, and because the streets climb the hill, tell us if the van would be parked on a steep stretch or at the bottom of a flight of steps.
The council draws Harehills between Spencer Place to the west, Harehills Avenue to the north, Foundry Place to the east and Compton Road and Stanley Road to the south. Harehills Lane and Harehills Road are the two shopping streets, both meeting Roundhay Road at their northern ends, and there is a second shopping area where Harehills Lane meets Compton Road. St James's University Hospital is within Harehills, and Montague Burton's old factory is on Hudson Road.
How the van gets to Harehills
Roundhay Road, the A58, runs along the north side out of the Sheepscar Interchange, and York Road, the A64, along the south. From Bradford, the A647 and the Leeds Inner Ring Road reach either one, and Harehills Lane, numbered the B6159, crosses the district between them.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 30 to 40 minutes. That is an estimate from route data, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.
