Our man and van in Wakefield
Man With Van Long Wheelbase is one driver and one Ford Transit long wheelbase van, based in Bradford, 19 miles from Wakefield (35-45 minutes by road). Wakefield is inside our core area, so the drive is simply part of one fixed price agreed before we set off.
Moving in Wakefield: what to know first
Agbrigg grew on what was once Sandal Common, and its Victorian terraces, with those of Belle Vue next door, are the tight end of a Wakefield move. Front doors open onto the pavement, cars line both kerbs, and streets such as Elm Tree Street and Portland Street are one-way, so the van stops where a gap allows. Many rows have a back street, Back Bowman Street or Back Montague Street for example, so say which door is easier. The railway bridge on Agbrigg Road has a 3.7m limit, which the van clears. Kerb space near Belle Vue Stadium on Doncaster Road is scarcer on Wakefield Trinity match days.
The council began its estates after the First World War, Portobello first and Lupset the largest, with Flanshaw, Plumpton, Peacock, Eastmoor and Kettlethorpe after them. On most of those streets the van stops at the door or on a drive. In Flanshaw several names come in pairs, Rydal Drive and Rydal Crescent for one, so check which you are on. Sandal is different: Barnsley Road and Manygates Lane climb from the river towards the castle, and some houses sit above the road on steps. East of the centre, City Fields is still being built off Neil Fox Way, so send the plot number with the address.
In the centre, the shopping streets around Trinity Walk and The Ridings are largely closed to traffic, so a flat above a shop is loaded from the nearest road a van may use and finished on a trolley. By the river, the flats at Chantry Waters and the other Waterfront blocks usually want the lift and the loading point arranged first. The van is about 2.5m tall, so it cannot use a car park behind a 2.1m barrier. For runs out, the M1 passes the west side of the city at junctions 39, 40 and 41 and meets the M62 at Lofthouse.
Parking and access in Wakefield
Terraces in Agbrigg, Belle Vue and Alverthorpe have on-street parking only, usually with cars on both sides; the estates mostly have drives or room at the kerb. In the centre we check the current charges for whichever on-street bay or surface car park we use.
- Much of the city-centre shopping area around Trinity Walk and The Ridings is pedestrianised, so a flat above a shop is loaded from the nearest street a van can use and carried from there.
- In Agbrigg, Elm Tree Street and Portland Street are one-way and many terraces have a back street, so the easier door is worth naming; the Agbrigg Road railway bridge has a 3.7m limit, which the 2.5m van clears.
- Barnsley Road and Manygates Lane climb from the river towards Sandal Castle, so some Sandal houses mean a carry up steps from the pavement.
- Flanshaw has paired street names, such as Rydal Drive and Rydal Crescent or Wasdale Road and Wasdale Crescent, so the full address matters.
- The van is about 2.5m tall, so multi-storey decks with height barriers are no use to it; on-street bays and surface car parks are what we plan around.

Frequently asked questions: man with a van in Wakefield
How much does a man and van cost in Wakefield?
It is one fixed price for the job, agreed before we set off, and there is no travel surcharge for Wakefield. The figure comes from how much is moving, the access at each end, such as a terrace with no parking outside, a lift at the Waterfront or steps up to a Sandal front door, and the distance between the two addresses. Send photos and both postcodes; our prices page explains how the figure is built.
Do you cover the rest of the Wakefield district?
Yes, from Ossett and Horbury across to Normanton, Castleford, Pontefract and Knottingley. Each has its own page, and a job there is quoted the same way, as one fixed price agreed before setting off with the drive already in it.
We're moving into a new-build at City Fields or another Wakefield estate. Anything to know?
Send the development name and plot number as well as the postcode. A street that is still being built may have site traffic, no dropped kerb yet or no name on the satnav, and a photo of the approach lets us plan where the van stops.
Can you load at a flat above a shop in the centre or at the Waterfront?
Yes. Around Trinity Walk and The Ridings we work from the nearest street a van can legally use and carry from there on a trolley. At Chantry Waters or another Waterfront block, ask the managing agent about the lift and the loading point, and send us their answer before the day.
