Moving in Sandal Magna: what to know first
Most homes in Sandal Magna are on the quiet closes and groves either side of Walton Lane: Welburn Close, Wentworth Way, Harwood Close, Woodlands Croft, Cleevethorpe Grove, St Helens Grove, Stillwell Garth, Wingate Grove and Wingate Croft. These are short residential streets where a long van can normally stop at the door or across the drive. Walton Lane falls only gently east from the church, so there is no real hill on the carry.
Barnsley Road, the A61, is the busy edge. It is divided by islands around the Walton Lane junction, and Sandal Castle primary and St Thomas a Becket secondary are both on it, so it is busy at school times. The van should not wait on it: for a house facing Barnsley Road, say whether there is a drive, or the van will use Walton Lane or Beechfield. Sandal Grange Gardens is a private road, so check with the management where a van may stand.
Sandal Magna: the local picture
The church group is the oldest part. St Helen's replaced an earlier church in about 1150 with a cross-shaped building put up by Earl Warenne, was almost entirely rebuilt in the first half of the 14th century, and was restored and enlarged in 1872; even its late 19th-century churchyard gates are listed. Nearby on Barnsley Road stand the 18th-century Sandal Vicarage and Sandal House, Orchard Cottage in a Gothic style, and a 17th-century house south of number 274 that later became an outbuilding. The name comes from the Early Scandinavian sandr, sand or gravel, and healh, a meadow.
Walton Lane leads away from the church to later housing: Sandal Hall Mews and Sandal Hall Close, Beechfield, Ashdale, Helmsley Road, Rosedale Avenue, Mountbatten Avenue, Malt Kiln Croft, Stillwell Grove and The Wickets. The West Yorkshire Sports and Social Club on Sandal Hall Close and the crown green bowling greens off Walton Lane make easy markers for the driver. Leaving one of the older stone houses by the church, send photos of the doorways and the stairs so the driver can plan the carry.
How the van gets to Sandal Magna
Barnsley Road, the A61, runs past St Helen's, and Walton Lane turns off it here towards Walton; the junction is split by islands, so the van turns in rather than stopping on the main road. From Bradford the van takes the M606, M62 and M1 to the A650, crosses Wakefield by Ings Road and the Wakefield Bridge, then follows the A61 south, roughly 35 to 50 minutes in all.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 35 to 50 minutes. That is an estimate, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.

Frequently asked questions: man with a van in Sandal Magna
Where is Sandal Magna Community Academy?
Not in Sandal Magna, despite the name: the school is on Belle Vue Road in Agbrigg, WF1 5NF, just under a kilometre north of St Helen's. If a school or a church is the landmark you would usually give, add your own street and WF2 postcode as well.
Do Sandal Magna and Sandal mean the same area?
They overlap: Sandal Magna is the old name of the whole parish, but today it is used mostly for the church end of Sandal, around St Helen's and Walton Lane. Either way the address is in WF2 and the Wakefield South ward, with bins and council tax through Wakefield.
Is giving Walton Lane as my street enough for the driver?
Add the house number and the nearest close as well. Walton Lane runs for more than half a mile from the A61 by St Helen's towards Walton, with closes and groves off both sides, so a side-street name tells the driver which end to come in from.
