Our man and van in Shipley
Man With Van Long Wheelbase is one driver and one Ford Transit long wheelbase van, based in Bradford, 4 miles from Shipley (10-20 minutes by road). Shipley is inside our core area, so the drive is simply part of one fixed price agreed before we set off.
Moving in Shipley: what to know first
Saltaire is the part of Shipley that needs the most planning. The whole village is a World Heritage Site and a conservation area, and every house in it is listed, so a sofa or wardrobe has to fit the door and stairs as they stand. The stone terraces open straight onto the pavement, but many rows, Caroline Street, Titus Street and George Street among them, have a back alley, which is sometimes the better way out. Victoria Road fills with visitors walking to Salts Mill, especially at weekends, so a weekday move there is calmer.
The town centre is a loop of one-way roads, Otley Road, Commercial Street, Briggate and parts of Kirkgate, around a pedestrian core, with much of Market Square and Well Croft closed to traffic. A flat over a shop there is loaded from the nearest street the van can use, so tell us the shop it sits above. The multi-storey car park by Asda is no use to a van about 2.5m tall. East of the centre, Windhill climbs under the gritstone crags in rows of Victorian terraces with parking on the street only.
West of Saltaire, Moorhead and Nab Wood have Victorian terraces and larger stone houses, and more of them have a drive or a side gate. Wrose, up the hill by Carr Lane, is mostly 1930s semis with room to pull up outside. The mill apartments on Salts Mill Road, across the canal, carry BD17 postcodes although they are in Shipley, and there the lift and the managing agent matter more than the street. Shipley is in our core area, so there is no travel surcharge.
Parking and access in Shipley
The van is about 2.5m tall, so the multi-storey car park by Asda is no use to it. In Saltaire the terraces are parked tight on both sides, and the Caroline Street car park is the nearest open parking for some rows. Windhill and the town-centre terraces are on-street only, so the van stops at the nearest legal gap and the trolley does the rest.
- Saltaire is a World Heritage Site and conservation area where every house is listed, so furniture has to fit through the doors and stairs as they are; many terraces have a back alley behind them.
- Much of Market Square and Well Croft in the town centre is pedestrian, inside a loop of one-way roads, so a flat over a shop is loaded from the nearest street the van can use.
- Windhill and Wrose sit on rising ground east of the centre, and Carr Lane up to Wrose is a steady climb for a loaded van.
- Victoria Road and Saltaire Road fill with visitors walking to Salts Mill and the cafes at weekends, so a weekday slot in Saltaire is easier.

Frequently asked questions: man with a van in Shipley
How much does a man and van cost in Shipley?
It is one fixed price for the whole job, agreed before we set off, and Shipley carries no travel surcharge. The figure comes from how much is moving, how far it is going and the access at each end: a carry along a Saltaire pavement, a lift in a mill building or a steep Windhill street. Send photos and both postcodes, and our prices page explains how the figure is built.
Can the van park outside a Saltaire terrace?
Usually close by, where stopping is legal. The houses open onto the pavement and the streets are tightly parked, so give the house number and say whether the back alley is easier. If the van has to wait a few doors down, the trolley covers the gap and the carry is in the price.
Do you move flats in the mill apartments on Salts Mill Road?
Yes. Ask the managing agent which entrance removals should use, whether the lift can be held and when moves are allowed, then pass that on when you book. The buildings carry BD17 postcodes, so give the full address and the block name.
Do you cover Windhill, Wrose and Nab Wood?
Yes, along with Moorhead, Hirst Wood, Owlet, Northcliffe and the town centre. Wrose and Saltaire also have their own pages. Baildon, across the river, and Frizinghall and Heaton on the Bradford side are covered too, each on its own page.
