Moving in Queensbury: what to know first

There is no flat way into Queensbury. The A647 climbs up from Great Horton and Horton Bank Top, the A644 climbs from Brighouse on the other side, and a loaded long-wheelbase van is slow on both. The crossroads at the Albert Memorial, where those two roads meet in the middle of the village, is busy with little room to pull in, so we sort out where the van will stand before arriving.

The old village core around High Street and Black Dyke Mills is gritstone terraces with front doors close to the pavement. Rear yards are often reached by ginnels too narrow for a trolley, so furniture comes out of the front. Further out, at Clayton Heights and Scarlet Heights, the housing is mostly semis and newer homes, which are easier to load.

Queensbury has had no railway station since the line closed to passengers in 1955, so almost everything moves by road, students heading off to Bradford, Halifax or Huddersfield included. Black Dyke Mills is now split into business units, so a drop there needs the unit number and someone to open up, and kit for an event at Victoria Hall means agreeing a time with whoever is running it.

Mostly on-street parking, and the terraced streets off High Street are parked on both sides with frontages close to the main road. Check any signs before stopping; a neighbour keeping a space free is often the practical answer.
