West Scholes: what to know before moving day
The oldest house is West Scholes House and Cottage, dated 1694, in gritstone with a stone slate roof and listed Grade II*. Across from it, two stone water troughs set one above the other are listed as well. Close by are 27 to 43 Low Lane Side, a sandstone row of the 1820s, Westwood, a house of about 1850 at the end of a row, and 51 and 53 West Scholes Lane, once a single house and now two cottages. The lanes decide how a move goes. Carter Lane runs south from the hamlet to Thornton Road, which carries on down into Queensbury. Low Lane heads west, Brewery Lane goes north and Cockin Lane runs off to the north-east. OpenStreetMap marks Brow Lane, off Cockin Lane, as discouraged for lorries, and Harp Lane to the south is a bridleway, so Carter Lane is the sensible way for the van to arrive. The Junction Inn and Foxhill Primary School are the nearest mapped landmarks.
How the van gets to West Scholes
From the city, drive up the A647 to Queensbury, then leave the village on Thornton Road, a minor road that heads north-west out of the centre. Carter Lane turns off it into West Scholes. Albert Road, the A644 through Queensbury, passes a short way to the south-west.
