Clayton: what to know before moving day
The centre of the village has been a conservation area since 1977, and the listed buildings are thick on the ground. 1, 3 and 5 Broadfolds began as a farmhouse of 1649, Green End has two terraced rows of about 1820 that follow the curve of the road, and several rows of cottages from around 1815 line Bradford Road. The Village Hall on Reva Syke Road was the mechanics' institute, and the primary school building dates from 1859. Many of these cottages have mullioned windows and old doorways, so send measurements with your photos.
Clayton Lane is the main street, running alongside Victoria Park, with the Fleece at the top, then the Royal Hotel, the Albion and the Black Bull. St John the Baptist's church opened in 1851. On the edge of the village, Clayton Golf Club's nine-hole course is on Thornton View Road, next to the former Thornton View Hospital buildings, which became a girls' school in 1992.
Clayton Parish Council was formed in 2004 and manages the Glenholme allotments and comments on planning, but bins, council tax and parking are still Bradford Council matters, through the Clayton and Fairweather Green ward.
How the van gets to Clayton
The way out from Bradford is Clayton Road, which ends at the junction of Bradford Road and Pasture Lane, where the village begins. Bradford Road then carries on into the centre as a 30 mph road, and Pasture Lane leads round to Station Road and Thornton View Road. Clayton lost its railway when the Queensbury lines closed to passengers in 1955, so there is no station to use.
