Buttershaw: what to know before moving day
The estate was built from 1947 into the 1960s on farmland that had been heavily mined, and the Ordnance Survey map of 1852 shows pits all across it. Since the 1980s many of the older homes, including some blocks of flats, have been demolished and replaced, so a Buttershaw address may be a post-war council house or a much newer build.
The Reevy streets are the core: Reevy Road, Reevy Road West, Reevy Avenue, Reevy Crescent and Reevylands Drive. Buttershaw Business and Enterprise College, which opened in 1956 as Buttershaw Secondary School, is on Reevy Road West, Reevy Hill Primary School is on Bedale Drive and Farfield Primary is on Reevy Crescent. Wibsey Park and Slack Dam are next to the college.
Wibsey Slack was marshland, coal mines and slag heaps until an Inclosure Act of 1881, which led to Wibsey Park. Buttershaw's parish church, St Paul's, is in Wibsey, because the original settlement was about 1.6 km east of today's estate.
How the van gets to Buttershaw
Wibsey Park Avenue runs through the estate, meeting Reevy Road, Reevy Avenue and Farfield Avenue, and Farfield Avenue runs on to Beck Hill near Halifax Road, the A6036. Beacon Road, the B6380, meets Reevy Avenue. Wibsey Park Avenue and Farfield Avenue have 30 mph limits and bus stops, so give the house number and a note of where a van can pull in.
