Wyke: what to know before moving day
Wyke was a township and chapelry in the parish of Birstall and became a civil parish of its own in 1866. Its centre is Town Gate, which carries the B6379 along with Westfield Lane, and has the Wyke Village Green on the map, St Mary the Virgin church (Grade II listed), the post office and pubs including the Low Odd, the Brown Cow and the Top Odd.
Wyke Methodist Church is at Laverack Field; the Wesleyans first met in a cottage on Wyke Lane and built their chapel in 1869. For sport, Wyke Sports Village on Wilson Road opened in September 2022 with a cycle track, floodlit 3G pitch and grass pitches. Worthinghead Primary School is on Wyke Lane.
The area also has a railway past. The Pickle Bridge line from Bradford to Huddersfield had a northern station later renamed Wyke and Norwood Green, and a 22-arch stone viaduct known locally as the Red Lion viaduct. The line shut in 1952, and the viaduct was Grade II listed by the time 14 of its arches were taken down in 1987.
How the van gets to Wyke
Westfield Lane and Town Gate form the B6379 through the middle of Wyke, and Westfield Lane meets the A58 Whitehall Road. Wyke Lane links Town Gate with Westfield Lane and Griffe Road, and Town Gate runs on to Huddersfield Road. What was the Red Lion viaduct?
The local name for the Wyke viaduct on the Pickle Bridge railway, a 22-arch stone bridge about 250 metres long. The line closed completely in 1952, and the northern 14 arches were demolished in 1987.
