Low Moor: what to know before moving day
Low Moor grew up around the Low Moor Ironworks, founded in 1791, which made wrought iron here until 1957. Before the works it was a hamlet of a few weavers' cottages. Much of the village was redeveloped in the 1960s and 1970s, and parts of it are still industrial. One street carries a date of its own: the 29 houses on First Street were built in 1919 to replace homes lost in the 1916 explosion at the munitions works at the bottom of New Works Road.
For finding an address, Huddersfield Road is the spine. Common Road, Park Road, School Street and St Mark's Avenue are among the streets around it, near St Mark's Church, and Harold Park, with its reservoir, is an easy landmark to give the driver. Royds Hall, a Grade II* listed manor house begun in 1640, stands to the west of the village. If your house fronts the A641 itself, say so when you book: it is a main road, so where the van waits while it loads is worth sorting out beforehand.
If you are moving here and commuting, Low Moor has had a station again since 2017 (the original closed in 1965), on the line between Bradford Interchange and Halifax. It has one train an hour each way, four direct Grand Central trains a day to London King's Cross, and a car park with 128 spaces.
How the van gets to Low Moor
The A641 comes south from Odsal as Manchester Road and becomes Huddersfield Road as it enters Low Moor, so it is the direct way in from the Bradford side. From the motorway, the M606 runs between junction 26 of the M62 and the Bradford ring road at Staygate, by Odsal, and Low Moor station is close to both motorways. The station is on New Works Road and has direct access to the Spen Valley Greenway, a cycle track built along the old Spen Valley railway line.
