Moving in Halifax: what to know first

Halifax is built into the sides of a bowl, so most streets climb. Back-to-back terraces in King Cross, Pellon and Boothtown share their rear wall with the next row, with ginnels between the blocks rather than back streets, so everything comes out of the front door onto a cambered pavement. Many have a cellar and an attic as well as two floors, which is why a terrace often holds more than its bedroom count suggests. On the steepest banks, say if the van will be standing on a slope outside.

In the centre, the Woolshops and Southgate are pedestrian streets, and the A629 town-centre scheme closes Market Street and a short stretch of Northgate to traffic, so a flat over a shop there is loaded from the nearest open road and trolleyed in. Commercial Street carries buses and traffic, which gives a closer stop where the restrictions allow. The multi-storey car parks are no help: the van is about 2.5m tall and will not pass a 2.1m height barrier.

Out of the centre the jobs change shape. Savile Park and Skircoat Green have big stone villas with steps up from the pavement and long staircases, often more than one load for a whole house. Mixenden and Illingworth, and the estates round Ovenden, are post-war housing on high, exposed ground, usually with wider roads and more room to park. Northowram and Shelf, on the Bradford side, mix stone terraces with semis, and more of the houses have a drive.

Parking and access in Halifax

Central multi-storeys are no use to a van about 2.5m tall, which does not fit under car-park barriers of around 2.1m. Commercial Street stays open to traffic, so the van stops as close as the restrictions allow; on the terraces there is no off-street parking, so it is first come on a hill and sometimes a longer carry.

• Steep gradients in and out of the town-centre bowl, with Beacon Hill and the climbs up to Pellon and Boothtown sitting well above the centre.
• Back-to-back terraces in King Cross, Pellon and Ovenden have no rear vehicle access, only ginnels, so everything is carried through the front door.
• Commercial Street is open to traffic; the Woolshops and Southgate are pedestrian, and the A629 town-centre scheme closes Market Street and part of Northgate to traffic, so those addresses are walked in from the nearest road.
• Terraced streets on the valley sides are steep and cambered, which slows loading at the back doors.
