Shibden: what to know before moving day
The name means sheep valley, and the land has been farmed for centuries. The mapped centre is Shibden Dale, a hamlet at the bottom of the valley beside the Shibden Mill Inn and the bridge where Lee Lane crosses Shibden Brook. Up the valley to the north stands Scout Hall, built in 1680 for a silk merchant, listed Grade II* but on the heritage at-risk register. The farm called Black Boy is just to the south-west.
Further down the valley, just under a mile to the south, Shibden Hall is the best-known building: a Grade II* house from about 1420, home of the diarist Anne Lister and the setting for the television series Gentleman Jack, now a museum in Shibden Park with a boating lake and miniature railway. The old Magna Via between Halifax and Wakefield crosses the lower valley over Beacon Hill, and the Bradford to Halifax railway runs under Beacon Hill in a tunnel of 1,105 yards.
How the van gets to Shibden
Two lanes meet in Shibden Dale. Lee Lane comes down from the Boothtown side, starting at the junction with Bradford Old Road and Ploughcroft Lane, and Blake Hill climbs out eastwards to Kell Lane and Howes Lane on the Northowram side. Parts of both are mapped at 60 mph, as rural lanes, and Simm Carr Lane heads north up the valley. For a farm or a cottage down a track, send a photo of the entrance and say whether a long van can turn round.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 20 to 35 minutes. That is an estimate from route data, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.
