Where we stop the van decides how hard the next ten minutes are. On the valley-side terraces we try to park above the address rather than below it, so the weight travels down the ramp and along the flags instead of being shoved up a setted slope. Can you get a washing machine down to a cellar kitchen?

Often, yes, but it turns on the head height and the twist in the cellar staircase. Send photos of the top of the stairs and the turn at the bottom and we will tell you before the day whether it will go. If it genuinely will not, we say so rather than wedging it halfway down.

Do you connect the machine once it is in place?

A washing machine, yes, within reason. If the fittings under the sink are the standard ones we will reconnect the cold feed and the waste hose and make sure it is not weeping. Wiring is an electrician's and gas is Gas Safe work only, which on these old Halifax terraces is worth knowing before the day.

Will you take the old cooker away with you?

Yes, as long as you tell us when you book. The old cooker comes out as the new one goes in, leaves with us the same visit and goes to a household waste recycling centre. If you would rather keep it, we will shift it to the garage, the cellar or a relative in Sowerby Bridge instead.
