Up the hill, through the ginnel, in the one front door

The terraces at King Cross, Pellon, Ovenden and Boothtown have no rear vehicle access whatsoever. There is a ginnel, and there is a front door that opens onto a busy through road, and everything you have bought has to come through it. That changes what is worth buying: a flat-packed chest goes in easily, an assembled four-drawer one might not, and a long dining table often has to be turned on its side in the doorway before it will pass.

Gradient is the other half of it. The climbs up Beacon Hill, Godley Cutting on the A58 and the pull up towards Pellon all sit well above the town centre, and the terraced streets on the valley sides are setted and steeply cambered. A loaded long-wheelbase Transit gets chocked and handbrake-tested before the back doors open on a street like that, which is not something a car-boot collection ever has to think about.
