Very little large furniture is actually sold in the valley bottom. Wharf Street and Town Hall Street are small independent frontages, and the Mearclough Trading Estate off Holmes Road is trade units rather than showrooms. So most of what we carry in comes from a shop or warehouse in Halifax or Bradford, or from a private seller further down the Calder. Collection is the simple end: a loading bay, an order number, and 3.4 metres of van.

The delivery end is where the town earns its reputation. Tuel Lane, Bolton Brow and Sowerby New Road rise straight off the valley floor, narrow, parked both sides and with nowhere to pull in, and the terraces on them sit above the road behind steps. Higher again, the walled single-track lanes to Norland, Mill Bank and Boulderclough have no turning circle for a long van, so we walk the last stretch on the trolley.
