Moving in Sowerby Bridge: what to know first

The valley floor is where the town is busiest. The A58 runs through the centre as Wharf Street, which has a loading bay but very little kerb space besides, with shops, bars and flats close together along it and buses and through traffic all day. A centre job is planned around that loading bay or a nearby car park, and we ask about lifts and stairs in the Wharf conversions when you book.

The hillsides are the harder carries. Tuel Lane climbs north from beside Tuel Lane Lock towards Burnley Road, the A646, which runs separately along the north side of the valley. Bolton Brow and Sowerby New Road climb just as steeply, with terraces set above the road and steps to many front doors. Higher again, Norland, Mill Bank, Boulderclough and Cotton Stones are reached on narrow walled lanes with few places to turn a long van.

The river is part of the picture too. The Boxing Day 2015 floods hit the town hard and Storm Ciara flooded it again in February 2020, so ground floors near the Wharf and along the valley road have seen water. A common local move is up out of the valley bottom to Sowerby or Norland for more room and a garden, while the Caldervale line, with direct trains to Leeds and Manchester, brings commuters in.

Parking and access in Sowerby Bridge

Very little kerb space on Wharf Street, where the loading bay is the place to stop, and units at Mearclough are loaded promptly at the door. On the hillside terraces off Bolton Brow and Tuel Lane there is little or no off-street parking, and often steps between the road and the door

• Tuel Lane, Bolton Brow and Sowerby New Road climb steeply off the valley floor, with parked cars and few places to pull in.
• The A58 runs through the town centre on Wharf Street, where there is a loading bay but very little kerb space; the A646 runs separately along Burnley Road on the north side of the valley, linked by Tuel Lane.
• Hill hamlets above the town (Norland, Mill Bank, Boulderclough, Cotton Stones) are reached by narrow walled lanes with little room to turn a 3.4m-load LWB van.
• The valley floor near the Wharf is Calder and Ryburn flood plain, flooded on Boxing Day 2015 and again in February 2020.
