Warley Town: what to know before moving day
The village was recorded in the Domesday Book as Werlafeslei and stayed small until the early 18th century, when the Cliff Hill estate and a Congregational chapel formed the core it grew around. Cottages for farm workers were built in front of the chapel, along with bigger houses for Halifax businessmen. The chapel closed in 1977 and was turned into housing, now Chantry House. Patrick Bronte, father of the Bronte sisters, once lived at a house called The Grange beside it.
Listed homes are part of an ordinary move here: Warley Grange is 17th century with mullioned windows, Cliff Hill is a large 18th-century stone house, and Warley Edge Farmhouse carries the date 1633, though it was rebuilt in 1903. Several of the smaller lanes, including Edgeholme Lane, Dark Lane and Green Hill, are surfaced in setts. The disused telephone box near the Maypole Inn is now a museum of local history, run by the community association.
How the van gets to Warley Town
Warley Town Lane and Stock Lane are the through roads, and Paradise Lane and Cliff Hill Lane lead off them. Burnley Road (the A646) runs along the valley below, and two of the lanes on the hillside between, Water Hill Lane and Whitty Lane, are mapped as one-way, so the route up and the route down may differ. From Bradford the van comes through Halifax first.
