Our man and van in Keighley
Man With Van Long Wheelbase is one driver and one Ford Transit long wheelbase van, based in Bradford, 10 miles from Keighley (25-35 minutes by road). Keighley is inside our core area, so the drive is simply part of one fixed price agreed before we set off.
Moving in Keighley: what to know first
Most of central Keighley is stone terraces built for the mills: Highfield, Lawkholme, Guardhouse and the rows behind Skipton Road. Front doors open straight onto the pavement, cars line both kerbs, and many rows have only a narrow back ginnel, so the van stops at the nearest gap and furniture goes in by trolley. A lot of these houses have a cellar as well as two floors. Fell Lane, Highfield and Thwaites Brow climb hard out of the valley, and a loaded trolley up those banks in the wet is the slow part of the day.
The centre is partly pedestrianised. Most of Low Street, Church Walk and the Town Square are closed to traffic, the Airedale Shopping Centre is indoors, and Worth Way takes the through traffic round the edge, so a flat over a shop on Cavendish Street, North Street or Low Street is loaded from the nearest legal stop. The central multi-storey is no use, because the van is about 2.5m tall. Tower-block moves need the lift booked: Ebor Court, Quebec House and North Beck House at Holycroft are ten storeys each, and Kennedy House in Ingrow is twelve.
Away from the centre the houses get bigger. Utley to the north, Long Lee up on the east side and Riddlesden across the Aire have stone semis and detached houses, while Braithwaite on the western edge is a large council-built estate. Along Skipton Road the big Victorian townhouses have mostly been split into flats and bedsits, which means a shared hall and a flat number to give.
Parking and access in Keighley
The central multi-storey car park is no use to a van about 2.5m tall, which does not fit under car-park barriers of around 2.1m. Surface car parks such as Cavendish Retail Park and Lawkholme Lane suit a collection better. On the terraced streets parking is tight on both sides, so the van stops as close as it can and asking a neighbour to leave a gap helps.
- The terraced streets climbing out of the Aire and Worth valleys, Fell Lane, Highfield and Thwaites Brow in particular, are steep, which is heavy going with a loaded trolley in wet weather.
- Long rows of stone terraces with cars parked both sides leave barely a van's width, and the only rear access is through narrow back ginnels.
- Low Street, Church Walk, Cooke Lane and the Town Square are pedestrian, so flats over shops in the centre are loaded from the nearest street open to traffic.
- The tower blocks at Holycroft and Kennedy House in Ingrow are ten and twelve storeys, so the lift has to be booked and measured.

Frequently asked questions: man with a van in Keighley
How much does a man and van cost in Keighley?
We quote a single figure for the job and agree it before the van leaves Bradford; Keighley is in the core area, so nothing is added for the drive up the valley. Three things set it: the size of the load, the miles between pickup and drop, and how hard each end is to work. A Lawkholme cellar, a tenth-floor flat at Holycroft or a shop-top flat off Low Street each take longer than a semi with a drive. Photos of the rooms and both postcodes are enough to price it, and our prices page sets out the method.
Can the van get down a terraced street with cars on both sides?
Yes. The Transit is narrower than a Luton and stops as close to the door as the street allows. Asking a neighbour to leave a gap the night before shortens the carry, and if the back ginnel is the better way in, say so when you ask for a price.
Can you move a flat in one of the Holycroft or Ingrow tower blocks?
Yes. Tell us the block, the floor and whether the lift can be reserved for the morning. Loading and unloading are included, and a high floor simply takes longer, which is priced in before the day.
Where does the van stop for a flat in the pedestrianised centre?
On the nearest street open to traffic. Most of Low Street, Church Walk and the Town Square is closed to vehicles, so furniture for a flat above a shop there is trolleyed from the van. Tell us the shop it sits over and any back door, and the nearest stop is worked out in advance.
