Shop-over flats are the town's real apartment stock and they share a layout: a single door at street level between two shopfronts, a straight steep flight behind it, and a landing at the top with barely room to turn a mattress. Low Street and Cavendish Street are pedestrianised, the centre runs on a one-way system, and loading falls into timed windows, so we work out where the van legally stands before anything else.
The Airedale Shopping Centre multi-storey is no help either, since the ramp off Hanover Street has a height barrier a Transit will not clear. Out in the terraces at Highfield, Guardhouse, Ingrow and Fell Lane the streets climb hard and are setted in places, with cars nose to tail on both sides and rear access only through a ginnel. Wet weather on those gradients is the reason we chock the wheels every time.
