Weavers' cottages split in two, and a canal through the middle
The old core along Kirkgate, Briggate and Elliott Street is gritstone with narrow frontages, and where those buildings have been split the upper flat keeps the original cottage staircase. Those stairs are steep, often stone at the bottom, and they were built when furniture was smaller. The front door opens onto a narrow pavement on a street that is parked both sides, so loading is a short, well-drilled stop rather than a leisurely morning with the tailgate down.
