Weavers' cottages, canal bridges and the load going out
The old core along Kirkgate, Briggate and Elliott Street is gritstone weavers' cottages and through-terraces: narrow frontages, steps up from the pavement, no rear access at all. Kirkgate is the main shopping street and is parked both sides, tight for a van carrying a 3.4 metre load, and Briggate and Elliott Street are worse. Everything from a bedroom in one of those comes out of the front door and along the pavement to wherever the van fits.
The newer half of the town is the easy half. Estate housing off Howden Road and Hawber Lane has driveways and turning space, so the same room loads in half the time. We come over from Bradford on the A650 through Shipley, Bingley and Keighley, then the A629 and the A6034 in, about fourteen miles. The canal runs straight through the middle and the road bridges over it are pinch points worth planning around.
