Moving in Silsden: what to know first

Kirkgate is the A6034 through-road and the main shopping street: it twists through the centre past St James' Church and a line of older detached houses. Briggate, the second shopping street, is narrower, with parking down one side. The nineteenth-century terraces built for mill workers spread west of Kirkgate and along Bolton Road, with front doors on the pavement and small yards behind. The Leeds and Liverpool Canal runs through the middle of town, and some of the bridges over it are narrow, so the approach is chosen before the van sets off.

Parking in the centre is limited. The two Bradford Council car parks are small, fifteen spaces on Bridge Street and thirty-nine at Wesley Place, both pay and display Monday to Saturday and free on Sundays and bank holidays. For most addresses in the core that means a short stop outside the door, and a Sunday booking is the calmest way to do it.

Brunthwaite, a conservation area since 1977, sits on narrow lanes below Rombalds Moor, where a long wheelbase van needs a turning place agreed in advance. North-east of the centre the A6034 climbs steeply over the moor to Addingham and the A65. From Bradford the van comes up the A650 through Shipley, Bingley and Keighley, then the A629: 13 miles, in 30 to 40 minutes.

Two Bradford Council pay-and-display car parks: Bridge Street (15 spaces) and Wesley Place (39 spaces), charged Monday to Saturday and free on Sundays and bank holidays, so check the current tariff. Kerb space in the old core is very limited.
