Glusburn: what to know before moving day
The village grew around one employer. John Horsfall, who married into the Hartley family in 1844, turned John William Hartley's small weaving shed into a mill that at its peak employed 500 people, and more terraced housing was built for the workers. The streets nearest the Institute include Institute Street, Lodge Street, Croft Street and Hartley Street. The Horsfalls also built the Glusburn Institute of 1892, which gained its clock tower in 1911 and is listed, with a park across the road from the mill. The mill still stands and has been used by several firms since the Sirdar wool years ended in 1995.
Older buildings survive among them. Glusburn Old Hall, an early 17th-century stone house with an embattled turret, is listed, with Old Hall Road, Old Hall Close and Old Hall Way close by. Ryecroft Farm farmhouse is dated 1752, and Malsis Hall, built in 1866, later became a school and then a care home. A cast-iron milestone on Colne Road still reads Glusburn.
How the van gets to Glusburn
Colne Road, the A6068, is the main road through Glusburn, running from the Cross Hills end towards Cowling. Green Lane leaves it and joins Binns Lane and Lothersdale Road, and Lothersdale Road meets Park Road and Cononley Road. The A6068 joins the A629 at the Kildwick roundabout, which is the way in from Bradford via Keighley.
