Moving in Whitley Head: what to know first
There are only a few houses here, a short terrace and a building split into flats among them, and none is on a side street, so the van stops on Whitley Head itself. That stretch is 30 mph, but Redcar Lane on the Keighley side is a fast 60 mph lane, so the van pulls in on the 30 mph section, or into a drive or yard if you have one. Say which when you book.
For a flat with a shared entrance, tell us which floor you are on and whether the main door can be held open, and measure the turn of the stairs before booking a large sofa. Barrows Lane down to Steeton is a 20 mph road past newer streets such as Ghyll Close, with the shops and the station at the bottom, so a move to or from the village is a short run.
Whitley Head: the local picture
The road itself is named Whitley Head for a few hundred metres, a 30 mph section between Barrows Lane, which leads north to Steeton at 20 mph, and Redcar Lane, which runs on towards Keighley. All three are part of a West Yorkshire cycle route, so expect cyclists. Intake Lane leaves at the Redcar Lane end.
Around the handful of houses it is mostly woods and becks: Redding Wood, Currer Wood and Brighton Wood, the small valleys of Great Gill and Redding Gill, and Steeton Beck, with Steeton Moor beyond. Only BD20 6QU and BD20 6QS cover the houses, and the next postcodes are about half a kilometre away, so a house name matters as much as the number here.
How the van gets to Whitley Head
From Bradford the van usually comes through Keighley, leaving the town by Highfield Lane, West Lane and Black Hill Lane and following Redcar Lane north to Whitley Head, roughly 20 to 35 minutes in all. Coming from Steeton instead, Barrows Lane is the direct link, a 20 mph road up from the village.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 25 to 40 minutes. That is an estimate, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.

Frequently asked questions: man with a van in Whitley Head
Should I tell the driver to come through Steeton or over from Keighley?
Either works, and the driver will pick one on the day. From Bradford the quicker way is usually over from Keighley on Redcar Lane; Barrows Lane from Steeton is a 20 mph road. What helps most is the house name and which side of the lane it is on.
Where are the nearest shops and station to Whitley Head?
In Steeton, down Barrows Lane. The village has a post office, food shops and Steeton and Silsden station, with half-hourly daytime trains to Leeds and hourly ones to Bradford Forster Square from Monday to Saturday.
Is Whitley Head part of Keighley?
No. Although the quickest way out is often towards Keighley, the houses are in the civil parish of Steeton with Eastburn and the Airedale ward of Bradford Council.
