Moving in West Yorkshire: what to know first

West Yorkshire is two different jobs depending on which way you face. The western half sits in the South Pennines, where towns such as Halifax, Hebden Bridge, Holmfirth and Meltham are built into steep valley sides and terraces open onto sloping, cambered streets. Hebden Bridge even has over-and-under houses, one home stacked on another with the doors on different levels, so which door is yours matters on the day. East of Leeds and Wakefield the ground flattens towards the Vale of York, and estates of semis with drives make for quicker loading.

The two city centres need planning before the van arrives. In Leeds, East Parade has a camera-enforced bus gate open only to buses, hackney carriages, bikes and emergency vehicles, so a drop near it is approached from a legal side street. In Bradford, a city-centre scheme proposes pedestrianising Hall Ings, Broadway and Market Street, keeping deliveries but possibly at set times of day, so access is checked close to the date. Underground car parks are out too: the van is about 2.5m tall and will not pass a 2.1m barrier.

Distance across the county is less of a problem than the roads in between. The M62 runs east to west through the middle, the M606 links Bradford to it at Chain Bar, and the M1 comes up from the south to meet it at Lofthouse. Valley towns are a different matter: the A646 up the Calder Valley and the A629 between Keighley, Halifax and Huddersfield are slow, single-carriageway roads through town centres, and that is what decides the length of the day.

West Yorkshire: the local picture

Bradford district is the home ground: Shipley and Baildon minutes away, then up the Aire Valley through Bingley and Keighley to Silsden, with Haworth on the hill above and Ilkley out in Wharfedale. Leeds district stretches from Pudsey and Guiseley on the Bradford side through the city to Morley, Rothwell, Garforth and Wetherby on the far east edge.

Kirklees is a borough of valleys. The Spen Valley towns of Cleckheaton, Liversedge and Heckmondwike sit just south of Bradford, Batley, Birstall and Dewsbury follow the Calder towards Mirfield, and Huddersfield anchors the Colne and Holme valleys, where Holmfirth and Meltham climb towards the moors that run into the Peak District.

Calderdale follows the River Calder and its side valleys: Brighouse and Elland in the lower valley, Halifax on its hillside, then Sowerby Bridge, Mytholmroyd, Hebden Bridge and Todmorden as the valley narrows towards Lancashire. Wakefield district, mostly green belt, holds the city itself, Ossett and Horbury to the west, the Five Towns of Castleford, Featherstone, Knottingley, Normanton and Pontefract, and the former pit towns of Hemsworth, South Kirkby and South Elmsall in the south-east corner.

Frequently asked questions: man with a van in West Yorkshire

How far across West Yorkshire does the van go from Bradford?

All five districts. Shipley and Pudsey are roughly 10 to 25 minutes away, Brighouse and Halifax about 15 to 30, and Leeds, Huddersfield and Wakefield up to about 45. Todmorden, Castleford and the south-east corner around Hemsworth and South Elmsall take roughly 40 to 60 minutes. Further than that is a long-distance move, priced the same way.

Can you move me from one side of West Yorkshire to the other, say Todmorden to Wetherby?

Yes. A cross-county move is one job with one fixed price, agreed before the van sets off. The van collects at one end and delivers at the other, and the price allows for the drive between them.

Can you get into Leeds city centre with all the bus gates?

Yes. The van keeps out of camera-enforced bus gates such as East Parade and stops where loading is legal. Tell us the building's delivery entrance, and if it is a managed block, book the lift and loading area for the day.

My house is on a steep street in Halifax or Hebden Bridge. Is that a problem?

Not usually, but it changes the plan. Send photos of the street, any steps and the door, so the carry and the time are allowed for in the fixed price before the day.

Is one van big enough for a West Yorkshire house move?

For a flat or a one- or two-bed home, usually yes: the load space is 3.4m long, 1.3m between the arches and 1.7m high. A fuller house goes in two loads, which is worked out when the price is agreed.
