Man With Van Long Wheelbase is one driver and one Ford Transit long wheelbase van, based in Bradford, 16 miles from Ossett (30-40 minutes by road). Ossett is inside our core area, so the drive is simply part of one fixed price agreed before we set off.

Moving in Ossett: what to know first

Ossett grew on wool and coal. It is known as a shoddy town, where old cloth was pulled apart and respun, and coal was dug here from the fourteenth century until most of the pits had closed by the late 1960s. The terraced rows around Gawthorpe and the stone houses near the centre date from that era, and most open straight onto the pavement, so furniture leaves by the front door and the van stands at the kerb.

South Ossett, the southern part of town along Storrs Hill Road towards Horbury, is where most of the new building has gone. Houses there usually have drives and wider halls, which makes loading simpler. A move from a central terrace across to South Ossett is only a short drive, but the two ends are quite different jobs.

Off-street parking is in the council car parks on Illingworth Street, Jubbs Terrace and Prospect Road and the two on Ventnor Way. Some allow a short free stay with a ticket from the machine and longer stays are charged, so check the board on the day. The van stands about 2.5m tall and cannot use anywhere with a height barrier.

On Tuesdays and Fridays the market takes the central spaces, so a Wednesday or Thursday slot or an early start is easier for a long load.

• The outdoor market takes over the Market Place on Tuesday and Friday, 8.30am to 4pm, which removes the obvious kerb space in front of the Town Hall.
• The flea and craft market inside the Town Hall runs on the same two days.
• Stone terraces near the centre and around Gawthorpe open onto the pavement with no off-street parking.
• South Ossett, along Storrs Hill Road, has the newer estates and most of the drives.
