Coxley: what to know before moving day
The name was recorded as Cockesclo at the end of the 12th century, meaning a dell where there were cocks. The wooded valley of the Coxley Beck still splits Sitlington in two, with Netherton and Midgley to the south-west and Overton and Middlestown to the north-east, and Coxley Woods follow the stream. Coxley Lane and Coxley Dell carry the name down towards the river.
It is a small, mixed corner rather than a village with a centre. On the map the Coxley Mill Engine House Cafe and a sewage works are off Coxley Lane, the Go Outdoors store stands near New Road, and the Horbury Viaduct, dated 1905 on OpenStreetMap, crosses the valley close by. Homes are on Sandy Lane and Low Lane and on closes named after birds: Bittern Croft, Lapwing View and Redshank Place. Say which end of Sandy Lane you are on when you book, as the lane links two levels.
How the van gets to Coxley
Coxley is reached from the A642 between Horbury Bridge and Middlestown. New Road, the A642, passes just north of the bottom of Sandy Lane, and Hostingley Lane, part of the B6117, is a short distance east. From Bradford, the M606 to junction 26 and the M62 east lead to the M1, and the exits for Horbury bring you onto the A642 through the town and over the river.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 35 to 50 minutes. That is an estimate from route data, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.
