Silkwood Park to Storrs Hill: where it is bought and where it goes

The collection end is spread along the Wakefield Road side of town. Silkwood Park, the Sandbeds Trading Estate and the Ashley Industrial Estate at Flushdyke, plus the Longlands units, cover most of what people buy big and bring home themselves, and the working mills in the Healey district add the trade end of it. All of them are set up for lorries, which means a long-wheelbase van loads without drama.

Where it goes is the other half of the story. A good share of local moves are short trade-ups out of the stone terraces around Gawthorpe, Dale Street and Church Street into the newer estates in South Ossett, and new furniture usually follows within the month. Those terraces have no off-street parking and tight right-angle junctions between rows. South Ossett has drives, but Storrs Hill Road is a steep narrow climb a loaded van is better off going round.

What Ossett furniture & large item transport usually involves

Market days are Tuesday 8.30am to 4pm and Friday 8.30am to 5pm, which takes the Market Place out, so a Wednesday or Thursday slot is far easier for a long load
Free parking around the Market Place and on Ventnor Way makes a central carry straightforward on the other days
For South Ossett we take the longer way round rather than up Storrs Hill Road with a full van
Healey and Flushdyke lanes still carry mill lorries, so deliveries off them are timed to avoid meeting one on a blind bend
Replacing a suite or a bed? We can carry the old one out and take it with us on the same visit, though emptying a whole house or garage is not on the list

Which day is best for a town-centre delivery?

Wednesday or Thursday. The market fills the Market Place all day Tuesday and Friday with close to forty traders, which removes the kerb space in front of the Town Hall. On the other days parking round there is free and a central carry is about as easy as it gets anywhere we work.

Will you go up Storrs Hill Road?

Not by choice with a full load. It is a steep, narrow climb and a loaded long-wheelbase van has better options, so we take the longer route into South Ossett instead. It costs a few minutes and nothing else, and the delivery still comes into the room you want it in.

Can the old sofa go when the new one arrives?

Yes. We carry the old one out as the new one goes in and take it away on the same visit, and old appliances are dropped at a household waste recycling centre. We are not a clearance service, though, so we cannot empty a garage, a loft or a whole house.
