Moving up the hill with fifteen years of a terrace behind you
Stone weavers' and mill terraces off Dale Street, Church Street and around Gawthorpe are narrow, deep and full of built-in storage, with nothing thrown away because there has always been somewhere to put it. We pack them room by room and label by the room the boxes are going into, which matters when the new house has a different layout and you do not want twelve boxes marked kitchen stacked in a hallway you have to squeeze past.
The climb is the other half of it. Storrs Hill Road up to South Ossett is steep and narrow enough that a loaded van wants the longer way round, and a load that is packed loose shifts on a gradient. Uniform, filled, sealed boxes stack square against the bulkhead and stay where they are put. That is the practical reason we pack the way we do, not a preference.
What Ossett packing service usually involves
- Market days take the Market Place all day on Tuesday and Friday, so we pack around them and load on a quieter day where we can
- Parking is unusually generous here, free around the Market Place and Ventnor Way, which makes pack-and-move in one day realistic for smaller homes
- Terraces around Gawthorpe and Dale Street have no off-street parking and tight right-angle junctions between rows, so boxes are packed to be carried
- Boxes are labelled for the room they are going to in the new house, not the one they came from, which is the single most useful thing on a trade-up move
- Kitchens are packed last and opened first, with the kettle, mugs and a pan boxed separately and marked so the first evening is not a search

What it costs

Frequently asked questions: packing service in Ossett
Can you pack and move on the same day in Ossett?
For a small terrace or a flat, often yes, helped by the free parking round the Market Place meaning the van can sit outside all day. For a three-bedroom house we would rather pack the day before. We will tell you which yours is when we quote rather than promising and overrunning.
Do market days affect the booking?
Only if your property is central. Tuesday and Friday markets take the Market Place and the kerb space in front of the Town Hall for the whole day. If you are on one of those streets we will aim for another day, or start early enough to be loaded before the traders set out.
We are moving to a new-build in South Ossett. How should the boxes be labelled?
By the room they are going into, which we work out with you before we start. New-builds rarely have the same rooms as an old terrace, and getting that right means the van is unloaded straight into place rather than everything landing in the lounge and being moved twice.
