Netherton (Horbury): what to know before moving day
The village began as Nether Shitlington, the lower of the settlements in the old Shitlington township. Two buildings stand out: Netherton Hall, a Grade II* listed manor house built around 1775 for the Perkins family, whose name is carried by Netherton Hall Drive and Netherton Hall Gardens, and St Andrew's Church of 1881, designed by J. D. Sedding. The village hall, the Star Inn, the working men's club and Sitlington Netherton Junior and Infant School are all on the map close to the main road.
Coal shaped the rest of Netherton. Hartley Bank Colliery, sunk in 1872 on the far side of the Calder and Hebble Navigation, worked until 1968, and a mineral line from Caphouse Colliery once ran through the village to staithes at Calder Grove. Homes today sit along Netherton Lane and Upper Lane and on side roads such as Netherfield Avenue, Oakland Drive, Highfield Road, Coxley View and Glenfields. A side-road address is simpler for loading than one facing the B6117.
How the van gets to Netherton (Horbury)
The B6117 is the road to use. As Netherton Lane it runs north down to Horbury Bridge, where it meets the A642 between Wakefield and Huddersfield, and as Upper Lane it continues south to Midgley and the A637. From Bradford, the M606 and the M62 east to the M1 at Lofthouse lead to the Wakefield side of Horbury; junction 40 at Ossett and junction 39 at Durkar are the nearest M1 exits, and from the A642 at Horbury Bridge it is a short climb up Netherton Lane.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 35 to 50 minutes. That is an estimate from route data, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.
