Midgley (Horbury): what to know before moving day
Midgley was written Migelie in the 12th century, a name that may mean a large pasture or a clearing full of midges. It was one of the four places in the old township of Shitlington, which dropped the h in 1929 and is now the civil parish of Sitlington. Netherton and Midgley sit on the south-west side of the wooded Coxley Beck valley; Overton and Middlestown face them across it.
Timber has been part of the place since 1860, when Earnshaws began trading in Midgley, and the firm now also occupies the site of the Prince of Wales pit, later Denby Grange Colliery, which lay between Midgley and Netherton and closed in August 1991. The map shows the Denby Grange Colliery Ponds beside Stocksmoor Common Nature Reserve, two pubs, the Black Bull and The Mistle, and a nine-hole golf course at Midgley Lodge. There are no estate roads here: addresses are on Stocksmoor Road, Upper Lane, South Lane, Top Lane and The Old Woodyard. If your door is on the B6117 itself, say so when you book, because the van will be stopping on a through road.
How the van gets to Midgley (Horbury)
From Bradford, the M606 joins the M62 at junction 26; the M62 meets the M1 at Lofthouse, and the M1 south reaches junction 39 at Durkar. The A636 Denby Dale Road runs west from there and passes about a kilometre south of Midgley, where it meets the A637 close to Bar Lane. Stocksmoor Road, the B6117, leaves Bar Lane and runs north through Midgley to Netherton and down to Horbury Bridge, which is the other way in.
