Horbury: what to know before moving day

The oldest house in town is Horbury Hall on Church Street, dated by its timbers to 1474, and the parish church of St Peter and St Leonard was built between 1790 and 1794 by the Horbury-born architect John Carr, at his own cost. Streets such as Cluntergate, where Methodists met from about 1746, and Tithe Barn Street go back a long way; High Street and Queen Street hold the shops, and the map shows car parks on both.

Old industries were woollens, engineering and railway wagons. Charles Roberts moved his wagon works to Horbury Junction in 1873; the site later built Bombardier Voyager trains until it closed in 2005, and Eddison and Wanless now occupy it. The Slazenger factories have gone, though the Slazenger sports club keeps the name. Addresses run from the centre out to the Clifton Road, Manor Road and Southfield Lane areas and to Addingford towards the river.

The town centre is on a hill and most of the land slopes down towards the river, so it helps to know whether there are steps up to your front door and how far the nearest level kerb is.

How the van gets to Horbury

The A642 bypasses the centre to the south, with a branch road down to Horbury Junction, and the B6128 runs through the middle and north to Ossett. The M1 passes east of the town; the closest exits are junction 40 at Ossett, on the A638, and junction 39 at Durkar. From Bradford, the M606 and the M62 east to Lofthouse link with both.

The drive from Bradford is roughly 35 to 45 minutes. That is an estimate from route data, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.

What happened to Horbury's railway stations?

All three closed: Horbury and Ossett at Horbury Bridge, opened in 1840, Horbury Junction on Green Lane, and the Millfield Road station at Horbury Junction, opened in 1927. Trains still pass through, but a move into Horbury is done by road.

Horbury and Ossett: one town or two?

Two. Horbury has its own WF4 postcode district, while Ossett is WF5, although the south of Ossett shares the Horbury and South Ossett ward. The writer Stan Barstow called the pair the border country between the coalfield and the wool towns.
