Clayton West: what to know before moving day
All Saints Church on Church Lane, finished in 1875, is the only building in the village with a spire and can be seen from many places around it. The obelisk war memorial stands where Church Lane meets Holmfield Road, and Kaye's school, founded in 1862, is on Holmfield. Park Mill Colliery closed in 1989 after more than a century of work, and some of the old textile mills have been converted into homes.
The River Dearne runs along the valley floor: floods in 2007 affected about 420 properties in Clayton West and Skelmanthorpe, and there were summer floods in 2002, 2004 and 2008 as well. Can I still catch a train from Clayton West?
Not on the national network. The branch from the Penistone line closed to passengers in January 1983. The Kirklees Light Railway, a 15-inch gauge line, now runs from the former station along the old trackbed towards Shelley as a visitor attraction.
