Scissett: what to know before moving day
Mill owners built houses here for their workers, and some of the mills now hold shops and firms. Nortonthorpe Mills, off Cuttlehurst, has a Royal Mail delivery office and trade businesses, and Spring Grove Mill, known locally as Beanlands Mill, still has buildings off the A636 opposite the swimming baths. The River Dearne runs through the village and was part of the 2007 floods, so for Dearne Street, Dearne Terrace, Riverside or Water Street a winter date is worth a forecast check.
Wakefield Road is the main street, with Scissett Baths and leisure centre, The Crown, the working men's club, a Tesco Express and St Augustine's church. Scissett Middle School is also on Wakefield Road, Joseph Norton Academy is on Busker Lane (the B6116), and Nortonthorpe Sports Club is at the top of Springfield Avenue. Cuckoo's Nest, a stop on the Whistlestop Valley miniature railway, is on the edge of the village.
How the van gets to Scissett
