West Bretton: what to know before moving day
Many of the houses on Huddersfield Road are listed. Nos. 84 to 96 are a row of seven red-brick cottages of about 1790 with canted bay windows; Nos. 24 to 29 and No. 32, with its workshop, are late Georgian; Estate House, of about 1840, was the office for the Bretton estate. The school still uses its 18th-century red-brick school house, the town well of 1742 has a gabled stone well head, and Maltkiln Farmhouse stands off Bretton Lane. Older farmhouses and boundary walls are in local millstone grit.
Around them are a few later streets: Sycamore Lane, The Croft, Cobbler Hall, Stoneybrook Close and Maltkiln Drive. Bretton Lane has the village hall and the Junior and Infant School, and the cricket club plays on Park Lane. Bretton Hall itself, Grade II*, housed Bretton Hall College from 1949 and was a University of Leeds campus until 2007. On a listed cottage, check door and stair widths before the day.
How the van gets to West Bretton
From Bradford, the M62 meets the M1 at Lofthouse, junction 29; heading south, leave at junction 38 at Haigh, the A637 exit, and follow Huddersfield Road north-west to the village. The A636 Wakefield to Denby Dale road crosses the A637 just north-east of West Bretton. Allow roughly 35 to 50 minutes.

Will visitor traffic for the Yorkshire Sculpture Park affect my move?
It can. The park is a large open-air gallery on the edge of the village, and its visitors use the same A637. If your move falls on a weekend or a school holiday, an early start on Huddersfield Road is sensible.
What is Bretton Country Park, next to the village?
It and the Sculpture Park fill the landscaped grounds beside West Bretton, on the River Dearne, which is dammed there to form two lakes. The village and parish of West Bretton are separate from the park.
