Our man and van in Brighouse
Man With Van Long Wheelbase is one driver and one Ford Transit long wheelbase van, based in Bradford, 10 miles from Brighouse (15-25 minutes by road). Brighouse is inside our core area, so the drive is simply part of one fixed price agreed before we set off.
Moving in Brighouse: what to know first
The centre sits low by the River Calder, with the Calder and Hebble Navigation and its mooring basin alongside. Commercial Street and Bethel Street are the shopping streets, with the bus station between them and the Lüdenscheid Link bypass that carries through traffic round the centre. The van cannot wait on the bypass or in a bus stop, so a flat above a shop or an apartment in one of the converted mills is loaded from the nearest side street or legal bay, and an early start, before the shops open, keeps that carry short.
Across the river, Rastrick climbs a slope that faces north-east, so a loaded van goes uphill out of town to reach it. Much of it is semis and detached houses with garages on quiet estate roads, Carr Green Lane, Castlefields Road and Close Lea among them, where the van pulls onto the drive or up to the kerb. The older streets lower down are tighter: Capel Street and parts of Rosemary Lane are cobbled, so say if you live on one.
North of the centre, Bonegate, Waring Green and the streets around Thornhill Briggs are mostly older terraces with cars along the kerb, where the van holds its place only while it loads. Further out, Bailiff Bridge and Lightcliffe sit on the A641 and A649: stone rows on Wakefield Road open straight onto the main road, and the stretch down into Bailiff Bridge is steep, so the van loads from a side street where it can. Behind the main roads the avenues and closes are quieter, with room outside.
Parking and access in Brighouse
The terraces north of the centre have no driveways and cars along the kerb, so the van holds its place only while loading. Town-centre car parks have charges on the signs, and the van is about 2.5m tall, so it cannot use any car park or apartment garage with a 2.1m height barrier.
- The River Calder and the canal split the town in two, so a hold-up on the bridges in the centre has few quick ways round.
- Rastrick sits on a north-east-facing slope across the river, so a loaded van climbs out of the valley to reach it, and Capel Street and parts of Rosemary Lane are cobbled.
- Commercial Street and Bethel Street are the shopping streets, with the bus station and the Lüdenscheid Link bypass beside them, so town-centre loading is from the nearest legal point.
- Wakefield Road drops steeply from Lightcliffe into Bailiff Bridge, so a van stopped on it is on a slope and a side street is better.
- The A644 Wakefield Road towards M62 junction 25 can queue at peak times, so early and late-afternoon runs need slack.

Frequently asked questions: man with a van in Brighouse
How much does a man and van cost in Brighouse?
It is one fixed price, agreed before we set off, and Brighouse is in our core area, so no travel surcharge is added. The figure comes from how much is going, the access at each end, such as the stair above a Commercial Street shop or the lift in a mill apartment, and the distance between the two addresses. Photos of the items and both postcodes are enough for a quote, and our prices page explains what moves the figure up or down.
Do you cover Rastrick, Lightcliffe and Hipperholme?
Yes, along with Hove Edge, Bailiff Bridge, Clifton, Norwood Green, Woodhouse and the rest of HD6. All of them are in our core area with no travel surcharge. Elland and Halifax have their own pages.
Can you move us into a converted mill apartment by the canal?
Yes. Ask the building manager about move times, booking the lift and where a van may stop, then tell us the floor and whether there is a lift. A stair carry is fine; it takes longer, so it goes into the price from the start.
Will the van fit in a car park or an apartment garage?
Not one with a height barrier. The Transit is about 2.5m tall, so it cannot pass the 2.1m barriers many car parks and basement garages use. Tell us where you expect it to stop, and we will find the nearest place it can load from.
