Two bridges, one hill and a canalside lift

Everything in this town funnels over a handful of crossings of the River Calder and the Calder and Hebble Navigation. If the bridges at Brighouse Basin or Anchor Bridge are blocked there is no quick way round with a long van, so we check before setting off rather than discovering it with a corner suite in the back. The pull up to Rastrick from the valley floor via Bridge End and Rastrick Common is a hard start on a loaded Transit.

A lot of the housing near the centre is converted mill, particularly the canalside apartments around the Basin, and those are lift-and-stairwell jobs where the lift car decides whether a super king mattress goes up standing or does not go up at all. Lightcliffe, Hipperholme and the modern cul-de-sac estates are the other end of it, with wide halls, straight stairs and somewhere to leave the van, which is rarer round here than people expect.

In the valley-floor core, genuinely yes. Birds Royd and the Bradford Road terraces are flat, which takes the worst variable out of the job. The moment you head up to Rastrick or Hove Edge the gradient comes back, and the approach and the parking need working out beforehand.

Can you get a king mattress into a flat at the Basin?

Usually, but the lift car is the deciding factor, not the front door. A mattress that will not stand up in the lift has to go up the stairwell instead, which is fine as long as we know. Measure the lift or send a photo and we will confirm before delivery day.
