A level valley floor, then the pull up to Rastrick

On the valley floor the work is simple and quick. Victorian stone terraces around Birds Royd and Bradford Road have no driveways and narrow on-street parking on both sides, so the van generally blocks a lane briefly while we get the machine in, but the ground is level and the carry is short. Eight miles from Bradford on the A641 through Wyke and Bailiff Bridge, this is often a same-day job rather than a diary one.

The ground rises sharply either side of that, and it changes the job. Rastrick is reached by the pull up from Bridge End and Rastrick Common, which is a hard start with a loaded van, and Hove Edge climbs the other way. Everything also funnels over a handful of crossings of the Calder and the Calder and Hebble Navigation, so if the bridges at the Basin or Anchor Bridge are blocked there is no quick way round at all.
