Flagstone steps, the climb to Upper Edge, and one bridge into town

Elland flagstones were quarried here, and they are still what a lot of the yards, steps and doorsteps are made of. A worn flagstone step is slick in the wet and does not take an appliance trolley the way a concrete one does, so getting a washing machine up to a front door on the terraces around Elland Lane and Victoria Road is a lift rather than a wheel. Two people, straps under the machine, and no rush about it.

The Grade II listed bridge over the Calder and the Calder and Hebble Navigation is the pinch point into town. It was destroyed in the Boxing Day floods of 2015 and took until 2017 to rebuild, and traffic on the valley floor still funnels across it. From there the climbs begin, up to Upper Edge and Lower Edge and along Saddleworth Road towards Greetland and Stainland, with blind bends and few passing places. A loaded van goes up those slowly.

Can you get a fridge freezer up to a house at Upper Edge?

Yes, though the van often has to stop short. Those climbs are narrow with cars both kerbs, so we park where it is safe and bring the unit up on a trolley. Stone steps at the door are the slow part; tell us how many there are and we will allow the time properly.

Do you deliver out to Stainland and Holywell Green?

Regularly. The lanes out there are walled on both sides with very little turning space for a 3.4-metre load, so we work out the approach and the way back out in advance. Once we are at the property the access is usually better than in the town-centre terraces.

Do you disconnect the old washing machine for me?

No. Isolating the water, pulling the hoses off and dealing with the electrics is for you or your plumber before we arrive. At the new end we can put a standard cold feed and waste hose back on, and once the old machine is disconnected we can take it away to a household waste recycling centre if you told us that at booking.
