Moving in Elland: what to know first
Southgate, the main shopping street, has been remodelled under the town-centre improvement scheme, with much of it given over to people on foot and vehicle loading limited to set arrangements. Beyond the centre the ground rises quickly. Upper Edge and Lower Edge are steep terraced streets with cars on both kerbs. To the west, Saddleworth Road climbs from West Vale through Greetland towards Barkisland, and Stainland Road, the B6112, takes you up to Holywell Green and Stainland. Those villages are HX4 rather than HX5, built largely in local stone, with lanes between walls where a long van needs a planned stopping place.
Elland Bridge carries the road over the Calder and the Calder and Hebble Navigation towards Brighouse. Coming from the Brighouse side you cross it; coming off the M62 at junction 24 and down the A629 Elland bypass you do not, which is worth knowing when one approach is queuing. A typical local move runs out of a terrace near the centre and up to West Vale, Greetland or Stainland for more room.
