Moving in Old Lindley: what to know first
Old Lindley has no streets as such: its homes are stone farmhouses and cottages on Old Lindley Road and New Road, and the van stops on the lane beside the house or in its yard. The old hall alone is now three homes with almost the same name, Old Lindley, Old Lindley Farmhouse and Old Lindley Farm Cottage, so give the exact house name with the postcode and say which door the furniture goes through.
Turley Cote Lane is a track closed to motor vehicles, so a house reached only from it means carrying from wherever the van can stand on the lane. Say roughly how far that is when you ask for a price. Old Lindley Road leads out to the A643 Lindley Moor Road, the way to Huddersfield and the motorway, and New Road links to Jagger Green Lane for Holywell Green and Elland.
Old Lindley: the local picture
It is a very old settlement. The Domesday Book records it as Linlei, the name is read as a flax wood or clearing, and the Old was added to tell it apart from Lindley on the Huddersfield side; it has also been written Over Lindley. The house that shares its name is listed: a timber-framed hall of the 15th century, cased in stone in the 17th, extended in the 19th and now divided into three homes, Old Lindley, Old Lindley Farmhouse and Old Lindley Farm Cottage. A pottery once worked here, and the hamlet has its own moor, Old Lindley Moor.
Its local government has moved several times. Old Lindley was part of Stainland township, joined it in the civil parish of Stainland with Old Lindley in 1866, passed to Elland parish in 1937, was unparished from 1974 and became part of Stainland and District in 2017. Around the lane junction Bank Wood lies to the north, Thunnerley Wood to the west and Shavey Clough to the east.
How the van gets to Old Lindley
The van comes from Bradford by the M606 and the M62, leaves the motorway for the A629 Blackley New Road and follows the A643 Lindley Moor Road before turning into Old Lindley Road, roughly 25 to 35 minutes on the route estimate. Jagger Green Lane, which meets New Road just north-west of the hamlet, is the other way in.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 25 to 35 minutes. That is an estimate, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.

Frequently asked questions: man with a van in Old Lindley
My address says HX4, but the sat nav offers Lindley in Huddersfield. Which is right?
HX4. Lindley is a suburb of Huddersfield, in Kirklees; Old Lindley is the Calderdale hamlet in Stainland and District parish, with postcodes such as HX4 9FF. Search for Old Lindley Road or the full postcode instead of the bare name.
Can the van drive down Turley Cote Lane?
No. Turley Cote Lane is a track with no access for motor vehicles, so the van waits on the nearest lane it can use and the furniture is carried from there. Loading and unloading are part of the fixed price, so tell us the distance when you book.
Why does Old Lindley come under Stainland rather than Elland?
Because the parish was redrawn in 2017. It was in Elland parish from 1937 and unparished after 1974, but since 2017 it has been in the civil parish of Stainland and District, with Stainland, Holywell Green and Jagger Green. Calderdale Council runs the bins and council tax.
