House Removals in Elland

Elland flagstones were quarried here, and you can still see where they went: the yards, steps and setts on the older terraces are all local stone. They are also the surface a trolley has to cross, and they get slick in the wet. That, and the climb out to the quarry villages, is what shapes a move here.

Up the hill to the quarry villages, over one listed bridge

The move made most often around here is out of a Victorian terrace on the level ground between Southgate and the river, and up into a semi or a stone cottage at West Vale, Greetland or Stainland, for the space and the view. Short distance, two completely different jobs. At the bottom the van gets near the door; at the top you have a walled lane, a blind bend and a shuttle carry from wherever there is room to stand.

Elland Bridge is the pinch point for all of it. The Grade II listed crossing over the Calder and the Calder and Hebble Navigation was destroyed in the Boxing Day floods of 2015 and took until 2017 to rebuild, and the valley floor around it is still flood plain. Anything coming into town from the Brighouse side goes over it, so we check it is running before committing a loaded van to that approach.

What Elland house removals usually involves

  • Southgate, Westgate and Briggate are narrow with limited-waiting bays, so unloading means blocking a lane briefly or accepting a longer carry
  • Terraces around Elland Lane, Victoria Road and Upper Edge have no off-street parking and cars on both kerbs, so most jobs are a shuttle carry
  • Flagstone yards, steps and setts are hard on a trolley and slippery in the wet, so heavy items go on blankets and straps rather than being dragged
  • Quarry-village lanes at Stainland, Holywell Green and Barkisland have low stone walls both sides and almost no turning space for a long van
  • We can come in on the A641 through Brighouse or down from M62 Junction 24 at Ainley Top, whichever is moving on the day

Where in Elland we work

  • Southgate and Westgatenarrow centre streets on level ground, but only limited-waiting bays to stand in
  • Elland Upper Edge and Lower Edgesteep, narrow climbs with terraces and interwar semis and no off-street parking
  • West Valestone terraces and semis on the Greetland side, a common destination out of the town centre
  • Greetland and Stainlandformer quarry and weaving cottages and larger detached stone houses on walled lanes
  • Holywell Greenvalley-side housing where the van often has to stop short of the door
  • Ainley Topthe M62 Junction 24 side, where most of the through traffic arrives from

If your street isn't listed it's almost certainly still covered, Elland and the surrounding HX5 postcodes are all inside our normal working area.

Common Elland runs

  • Elland → Bradfordeleven miles via Brighouse on the A641, or the M62 and M606, 20 to 30 minutes
  • An Elland town terrace → Greetland or Stainlandthe standard local move up the hill, usually two trips
  • Elland → Huddersfieldstraight up to Ainley Top and off the M62, short enough for a same-day double run

What it costs

Time and load size set the price in Elland, and what adds time is almost always the climb and the carry rather than the run over from Bradford. There's no travel surcharge for coming to Elland from Bradford, and you get the price before we set off, not after. See how we quote for the full breakdown.

Frequently asked questions: house removals in Elland

Why does a move up to Greetland take longer than one in the town?

Because of the approach, not the distance. Saddleworth Road and the quarry-village lanes climb with tight blind bends and low stone walls on both sides, so a loaded long-wheelbase van goes slowly and there is rarely room to stand outside the door. That turns a doorstep load into a shuttle carry.

Can you get a van up to Stainland or Holywell Green?

Usually, but we plan the route and the turning point first. The lanes have low stone walls both sides and almost nowhere to swing a long-wheelbase van, so we often back in and carry out to the van rather than trying to turn with a full load on board.

Do you come into Elland over the bridge?

If we approach from Brighouse on the A6025, yes, because that is the way into town from that side. It was rebuilt after the 2015 floods and is fine in normal conditions, but the valley floor there is flood plain, so in bad weather we come down from Ainley Top instead.
