Holywell Green: what to know before moving day
Many of the houses were built for workers at Brookroyd Mills, which employed more than 1,200 people in 1857; Stainland Works now stands on that site in the valley. The Holy Well Inn, at the junction of Stainland Road and Station Road, reopened in 2024 under a community society, and a Nisa Local, a launderette and a fish and chip shop are on Stainland Road. Holywell Green Primary School is next to Stainland Road too.
Shaw Park, the former garden of the demolished Brooklands house, has its main entrance and car park near the top of Station Road, with footpath entrances on Shaw Lane. Carr Hall Castle, built by the Shaw family as a stable block and bailiff's house, is at the end of Shaw Lane. The traditional site of the holy well is a dry stone trough on Station Road inscribed Holy Well Improved 1843.
How the van gets to Holywell Green
Stainland Road, the B6112, is the way in from West Vale, past Burrwood Way and its two industrial parks, and it carries on through the village to Stainland.
