Moving in Lower Hirst: what to know first
Come to Lower Hirst from the Ray Gate end. From the corner of Ray Gate and Lamb Hall Road the first stretch of Shaw Lane is an ordinary lane as far as the farm; beyond it the lane turns into a public bridleway closed to motor vehicles, on dirt, gravel and old setts. A home past the farm buildings is reached on foot, so tell us how far your door is from the end of the made lane and send a photo of the surface.
Ray Gate climbs from the farm up to New Hey Road and has no pavement, so the van does not wait on it longer than it has to. If the last stretch is a carry, pack into boxes one person can manage over a rough surface, and if friends or family are coming to help, that is the part of the day where they make the biggest difference.
Lower Hirst: the local picture
The listed building here is the barn at Lower Hirst Farm, from the early to mid 19th century, with a stone slate roof, segment-headed barn doors and two rows of six ventilation slits on each side. Hirst Wood and Shaw Wood are close by, Longwood Brook runs nearby, and the fairways of Outlane Golf Club come right up to the lane.
Shaw Lane is the thing to plan around. It leaves the corner of Ray Gate and Lamb Hall Road as a public bridleway that is open to vehicles only as far as the farm, and its far south-western end, on concrete plates, is open to them again. In between it is closed to motor vehicles, so check which stretch your gate is on before booking.
How the van gets to Lower Hirst
The M62 is only a few hundred metres away, but the van does not leave it at Outlane. The usual route from Bradford comes off at junction 24, follows the A643 Lindley Moor Road west to the Mount roundabout at junction 23, and takes New Hey Road (A640) for a short way before Ray Gate and Shaw Lane. The whole drive is roughly 25 to 40 minutes.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 25 to 40 minutes. That is an estimate, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.
