Moving in Slack (Outlane): what to know first
Slack is a handful of homes on Slack Lane, Round Ings Road and Horse Pond Lane rather than a village with streets of its own. Several are listed stone buildings, among them the row of 1756 at 11 to 15 Slack Lane and Glenview, a house with mullioned windows. Doorways and stairs in houses this old can be tight, so measure the front door and the stair turn before booking a large sofa or wardrobe, and send a photo if you are unsure.
Slack Lane links the hamlet with New Hey Road and Outlane by passing under the M62 in a short tunnel, and that is the way the van comes in from the A640. Round Ings Road runs on south towards Nettleton Hill. Slack sits high on the Pennine edge of Huddersfield, a long climb up from the town, so for a winter move check the forecast the day before and keep a back-up date in mind.
Slack (Outlane): the local picture
The fort was a turf and timber post guarding the Roman road over the Pennines between Chester and York, possibly the Cambodunum of the Antonine Itinerary, and it was occupied until about AD 140. Nothing is visible now; its site is a scheduled monument, and the hypocaust found here was moved and reconstructed at Ravensknowle Park, home of the Tolson Museum. Outlane Golf Club's course is right beside the hamlet, and its 18th hole is called Roman Way.
Several homes are listed stone buildings. 11 to 15 Slack Lane is a listed row of 1756 with a barn on its north end and a roof hipped at the south, Glenview is an early 19th-century house with mullioned windows, and Butterworth Hill Farmhouse, reached by Horse Pond Lane, is 18th century. Longwood Brook runs past, and Outlane Methodist Church is about 200 metres away.
How the van gets to Slack (Outlane)
Junction 23 of the M62, at Outlane, is right beside Slack, though the usual route from Bradford leaves the motorway a junction earlier and comes back along the A643 and the A640 New Hey Road to Slack Lane, which passes beneath the M62 in a short tunnel before it meets Round Ings Road. Via the M606 and M62 the run from Bradford is roughly 25 to 40 minutes.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 25 to 40 minutes. That is an estimate, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.

Frequently asked questions: man with a van in Slack (Outlane)
Someone mentioned a Slack near Hebden Bridge. Could the booking get mixed up?
Only if the postcode is missing. That Slack is a hamlet in Heptonstall parish in Calderdale; this one is beside Outlane in Kirklees with HD3 3 postcodes. Some postcodes a few hundred metres away, such as HD3 3FF, already fall in Calderdale's Stainland and District parish, so the full postcode matters.
Is the Roman fort at Slack something I would notice when moving in?
No. Nothing of the fort is visible above ground, and its site is a scheduled monument, so it does not affect the lanes or where the van stops. The hypocaust found here was moved to Ravensknowle Park in Huddersfield.
Which side of the M62 is Slack on?
The south side. Outlane village and New Hey Road are to the north, and Slack Lane passes under the motorway in a short tunnel to join them. Round Ings Road and Horse Pond Lane are on the Slack side.
