Scapegoat Hill: what to know before moving day
The village grew with the woollen trade even though it never had a mill: handloom weavers were still recorded here as late as 1935. Many of the listed houses are weavers' rows in stone with stone slate roofs, among them 116-124 High Street, 2 and 4 Pike Law Lane, 22-22A Chapel Street and a terrace on Slades Road. The name was once Slipcoat Hill; Scapegoat Hill first appears in 1820.
Scapegoat Hill Baptist Church, built in 1899 and listed with its gates and railings, is the clearest landmark, and Scapegoat Hill Junior and Infant School is on School Road. The Scape House Inn and the Liberal Club are on the main street. At this height it is worth keeping an eye on the forecast in winter and having a back-up date in mind.

The usual way up is from the A640 New Hey Road, which meets the M62 at junction 23 at Outlane; from there the lanes drop south into the village.
