Moving in Upper Hirst: what to know first
Upper Hirst is a road junction more than a street of its own. The homes are the stone houses and terraces along Lamb Hall Road, several of them listed, and a few on Ray Gate, with the newer streets of Mount, such as Roman Avenue and Mount Avenue, just up the hill to the north. Lamb Hall Road and Ray Gate have no pavements, so the van pulls in tight by the house and loads quickly; if there is a drive or yard it can use instead, say so when you book.
Ray Gate climbs from the junction up to New Hey Road, the A640, a busy main road with one-way sections near the Mount roundabout, so the van turns off it rather than stopping there. Shaw Lane leaves the junction as a made lane only as far as Lower Hirst before becoming a bridleway, so it is no way through. Moorlands Primary School on Moorlands Road brings school-run traffic, and a mid-morning arrival avoids it.
Upper Hirst: the local picture
Lamb Hall Road runs south-east from here and is lined with listed stone buildings. 89 and 91 Lamb Hall Road is an early to mid 19th-century house with four-light mullioned sashes and a two-storey barn extending to the south, and 96 to 104 is an 18th-century terrace of five houses. Opposite 63 a stone drinking trough sits in a recess in a dry stone wall, and the coach house at 86 has a pediment facing the road.
Ray Gate is the link up to New Hey Road, and Moorlands Edge and Oxleys Square are close by. Mount Methodist Church and Moorlands Primary School are on Moorlands Road. If yours is one of the listed cottages, send the width of the front door and a photo of the stairs with your enquiry.
How the van gets to Upper Hirst
On the suggested route the van comes off the M62 at junction 24, runs along the A643 Lindley Moor Road to the Mount roundabout, which is junction 23, turns onto New Hey Road and drops into Ray Gate. From Bradford that is roughly 25 to 40 minutes, as an estimate.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 25 to 40 minutes. That is an estimate, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.

Frequently asked questions: man with a van in Upper Hirst
Upper Hirst or Lower Hirst: which one is my address?
Upper Hirst is the junction of Lamb Hall Road, Ray Gate and Shaw Lane; Lower Hirst is the farm further along Shaw Lane, at the end of the made lane. postcodes.io gives HD3 3XN beside Upper Hirst and HD3 3TG at Lower Hirst, so the postcode shows which.
Is Upper Hirst part of Mount?
It sits just south of Mount, which has the Methodist church and Moorlands Primary School on Moorlands Road, and both are in the Lindley ward with HD3 postcodes. Put Lamb Hall Road or Ray Gate and the house number on the booking so the van does not head for the estate streets.
Which houses on Lamb Hall Road are listed?
Among others, 89 and 91 with its barn, the 18th-century terrace at 96 to 104 and the coach house at 86. Doorways and stairs in houses that old can be tight, so measure the largest pieces and the front door before the day.
