Back-to-backs through King Cross, Pellon and Ovenden have no rear vehicle access whatsoever, only a ginnel, so a three-seater comes off the van, across the pavement of a busy through road and straight into the one front door there is. We take the feet off first, stand the sofa on its end in the hallway and turn it there rather than on the step, because that step is usually the only flat ground for fifty yards.

The valley-side terraces are stone-setted and heavily cambered, which matters more than people realise when a mattress is about to come out of a van. We chock the wheels and test the handbrake before the back doors open on any of those streets. Up at Savile Park and Skircoat Green the halls are generous but the staircases are long with a half-landing, so a solid divan base gets turned there or it does not go up at all.
