Fixby: what to know before moving day
Fixby is in the Domesday Book, and in the 19th century it was one large estate, with the social reformer Richard Oastler as its steward from 1830 to 1838. Fixby Hall, a mid to late 18th-century country house, is now the golf clubhouse and is Grade II listed, as are its stables, orangery, an ice house of 1796 and the lodges at the park entrances. The Kirklees Way footpath crosses the estate, and Huddersfield Crematorium is also in the area.
Homes are mainly along Lightridge Road and the roads off it: Broomfield Road, The Fairway, Larchdale, Kennedy Avenue, Nor Field, Oakdean and The Ghyll, with Fixby Junior and Infant School among them. Gernhill Woods, Dick Wood and Ochre Hole lie on the golf course side. Number 15 Lightridge Road, a one-storey stone house of the early 19th century, is listed, so not every house on the road is modern.
How the van gets to Fixby
The A641, signed for Huddersfield from Odsal Top in Bradford, passes about 700 metres from Lightridge Road as Bradford Road, heading for Bradley Bar. Fixby Road and Clough Lane carry the A6107 within about 500 metres, and the M62 runs a little to the north.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 25 to 40 minutes. That is an estimate from route data, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.
